An emergency is defined as an accident or illness for which treatment cannot wait until the
surgery is next open. For example:
- CHEST PAIN NOT RESPONDING TO TREATMENT
- ACUTE ASTHMA
- SUDDEN AND UNEXPLAINED SEVERE PAIN
- SEVERE HEADACHE
- SEVERE ABDOMINAL PAIN
- POSSIBLE BROKEN BONES, SEVERE CUTS, EYE/HEAD INJURIES
In all these cases go to Casualty at Russells Hall Hospital.
Common illnesses that are not normally emergencies are:
- EARACHE
- FLU AND COUGHING
- SORE THROAT
- BACK PAIN
- VOMITING AND DIARRHOEA
To try and improve inappropriate attendances we have a self help leaflet "What should I do?" which
gives you guidance on certain conditions. Alternatively, you can visit the following website
http://www.whatshouldido.com
Self-administration of pain relief, fluids and simple measures to reduce temperature, such as
Paracetamol or Calpol, is expected before a doctor is called. Thereafter, if symptoms persist, you should
contact the surgery when it next opens. If the condition is not considered to be an emergency, advice may
be given, or you may be asked to attend an emergency surgery.
Access
The majority of consulting rooms and treatment rooms are on the ground floor. However, we do have one consulting room and treatment room upstairs. If you are unable to climb the stairs please let the receptionists know. There are patient toilets and baby changing facilities on the ground floor. Access to all facilities is via the reception at the front of the building.
Disabled Patients
The building has been designed to be disabled-patient-friendly, with toilet facilities and a ramp at the side of the building for access.
